Audience Research

Points to consider

  • - Target audience: (the segmentation of the audience: demographic, psychographic and lifestyle)
  • - What assumptions does the text make about its audience in the way it attempts to target them?
  • - What assumption are made about the audience?
  • - In what conditions will the media text (magazines) be viewed? ( at home (living room/bedroom), with family/friends, on the bus, at school )
  • - what are the probable and possible readings of the text ?(preferred, oppositional and negotiated readings)
  • - How does the individual audience member read and evaluate the text?
  • - How does their individual background - ethnicity, age, gender - affect their reading? Look at uses and gratifications theory.
  • - Look at effects theory/hypodermic needle and think about how the audience would receive the text in a similar way.
